Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

Tender, flavourful meatballs simmered in a rich tomato sauce. Serve with pasta, rice, or crusty bread.

Prep: 15 minutes. Cook: 30 minutes. Difficulty: Easy. Serves 4.

Ingredients

  • 500g minced beef (or mix of beef and pork)
  • 1 egg
  • 50g breadcrumbs
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 can (400g) chopped tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 onion, finely diced
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Olive oil
  • Parmesan for serving

Instructions

  1. Mix mince, egg, breadcrumbs, half the garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper.
  2. Roll into golf-ball sized meatballs — about 16 pieces.
  3. Heat oil in a large pan. Brown meatballs on all sides — about 5 minutes. Remove.
  4. In the same pan, cook onion for 3 minutes. Add remaining garlic.
  5. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, and basil. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  6. Return meatballs to the sauce. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes.
  7. Serve with pasta, rice, or bread. Top with parmesan.

Tips for Helpers

  • Wet your hands before rolling meatballs — prevents sticking.
  • Do not skip the browning step — it adds flavour.
  • Meatballs and sauce freeze very well for future meals.

Ingredient Substitutions

  • Use chicken or turkey mince for a lighter version.
  • Add a splash of cream to the sauce for a creamier version.
