Meatballs in Tomato Sauce
Tender, flavourful meatballs simmered in a rich tomato sauce. Serve with pasta, rice, or crusty bread.
Prep: 15 minutes. Cook: 30 minutes. Difficulty: Easy. Serves 4.
Ingredients
- 500g minced beef (or mix of beef and pork)
- 1 egg
- 50g breadcrumbs
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 can (400g) chopped tomatoes
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 onion, finely diced
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- Salt and pepper
- Olive oil
- Parmesan for serving
Instructions
- Mix mince, egg, breadcrumbs, half the garlic, oregano, salt, and pepper.
- Roll into golf-ball sized meatballs — about 16 pieces.
- Heat oil in a large pan. Brown meatballs on all sides — about 5 minutes. Remove.
- In the same pan, cook onion for 3 minutes. Add remaining garlic.
- Add tomatoes, tomato paste, and basil. Simmer for 10 minutes.
- Return meatballs to the sauce. Cover and simmer for 15 minutes.
- Serve with pasta, rice, or bread. Top with parmesan.
