Mac and Cheese
Creamy, cheesy pasta baked until golden on top. A comfort food classic loved by the whole family.
Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 25 minutes. Difficulty: Easy. Serves 4.
Ingredients
- 400g macaroni pasta
- 50g butter
- 3 tablespoons plain flour
- 500ml milk
- 200g cheddar cheese, grated
- 50g parmesan, grated
- 1 teaspoon mustard (optional)
- Salt and pepper
- Extra cheese for topping
Instructions
- Cook macaroni according to packet instructions. Drain.
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add flour. Stir constantly for 1 minute to make a roux.
- Gradually add milk, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
- Cook for 3–4 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
- Remove from heat. Stir in cheddar, parmesan, and mustard.
- Add cooked macaroni. Mix well.
- Pour into a baking dish. Top with extra cheese.
- Bake at 190°C for 15 minutes until golden and bubbly.
Tips for Helpers
- Add milk slowly and stir constantly — this prevents lumps in the sauce.
- The sauce should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon before adding cheese.
- Can be served without baking if you are short on time.
